身近な場所で不発弾が見つかった。ニュースで見たその姿はどこかサンドバッグのように見え、むしろサンドバッグこそ不発弾に似せて作られたのではないかと思う瞬間があった。 An unexploded bomb was found near where I live. トレーニングで使われるサンドバッグは、英語圏では「パンチングバッグ」と呼ばれる。一方、英語での“sandbag”は土嚢袋を意味する。私はこの和製英語に準えて、土嚢袋を用いて不発弾の形をしたパンチングバッグを制作した。
殴るという行為が、ときに辛い記憶を乗り越えたり、忘れたりする過程と重なるかもしれない──そんな期待が背景にある。さらに、コンバットスポーツやマーシャルアーツでの戦いの状況は、戦争のような無粋な争いとは対照的であり、スポーツという文化が本質的には相手との和平の上に成り立っていることを際立たせてもいる。
展示は地下空間で行われた。この地域がかつて焼夷計画の対象だった歴史を踏まえつつ、地中に今も眠る不発弾の存在と、ジムに吊るされたパンチングバッグの光景を重ね合わせることで、過去と現在が響き合うようなインスタレーションを構成した。
In English, what we call a “sandbag” in Japanese is actually known as a “punching bag,” while the word sandbag refers to an actual sack filled with sand. Following this nuance of the Japanese pseudo-loanword, I decided to create a punching bag shaped like an unexploded bomb, using real sandbags as the material.
Behind this is the idea that the act of hitting something can sometimes overlap with the process of overcoming—or forgetting—painful memories. Moreover, the fighting that takes place in combat sports or martial arts is paradoxically the opposite of the crude violence of war; it highlights the fact that sports, as a culture, fundamentally rest on a form of mutual agreement and peaceful engagement.
The installation was presented in an underground space. Taking into account the fact that this area had once been a target of incendiary bombing plans, I juxtaposed the unseen presence of unexploded bombs still lying beneath the ground with the sight of punching bags hanging in a gym-like setting, composing an installation in which past and present resonate with each other.
